TO THE 85th ANNIVERSARY OF IRON AND STEEL INSTITUTE OF Z. I. NEKRASOV OF NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES OF UKRAINE

Abstract. In 2024, the Iron and Steel Institute of Z. I. Nekrasov of NAS of Ukraine (ISI) celebrates the 85th anniversary of its foundation. Over the years, the ISI has become the leading scientific and research center of ferrous metallurgy in the country, its specialists have created and implemented in industry a multitude of developments, inventions, technical and technological solutions. A number of the most large-scale works have been awarded the State Prizes of the USSR and Ukraine in the field of science and technology. The Institute has created large scientific schools in the field of iron metallurgy, steel and rolling production, non-furnace processing of iron, heat treatment of steel and metallurgy, physicochemical and heat and mass transfer processes, mechanical engineering and control and management systems for technological processes. Their interaction provides a comprehensive solution to the problems of increasing the efficiency of metallurgical production, improving product quality, resource and energy conservation. The article presents the main stages of the formation and development of ISI, presents the main scientific achievements in different periods of its history, which have always been aimed both at the development of fundamental metallurgical science and at the introduction of new technologies and materials into industry. Despite the rather difficult recent years, the Institute has managed to retain a highly qualified scientific team and continue and develop research in the most relevant areas of development of world metallurgy, such as decarbonization of metallurgical production, development of new technologies for complex heat, thermomechanical and cryogenic treatments of steel products, research into the structural state and the influence of structural heredity on the mechanical properties of finished products during 3D printing, etc. The activities of the Institute’s team are aimed at developing the scientific and technical potential of Ukraine, training new generations of researchers and introducing innovations aimed at increasing the efficiency of metallurgical production. By conducting research in the field of metallurgy and materials science, ISI’s scientists contribute to the development of fundamental sciences, expand the horizons of scientific research, enable us to set ambitious goals and adequately respond to the difficult challenges of today.
